Multilevel list, heading 1 screwed up from chapter 10th onwards
I have a 37 pages document (Office 2016, Windows 10), with around 15 Heading 1 (chapters, new page each) From Chapter 10 on, the heading wording gets a strange behaviour, say, from 10 FINAL QUOTATION to 10 ............ INAL QUOTATION Looks like the first letter (F in this case) is substituted by a series of dots, ressembling a TDC style. The TOC, the headings 2 and 3,... everything else is fine May I get some hints, please, about what can I check? thanks Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 10-21-2017 at 08:40 AM. Reason: Mark as solved |

Did you set your headings up using all of the steps at How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly?
If so, check your heading 1 style. See if there is a tab setting with a dot leader. |

Yes, I built the ML following the instructions you mention. Or at least, is what I believe And no, heading 1 doesn't have a tab with leading dot. In fact, heading 1 behaves well the first 9 times, but from 10th on substitutes the first char on the string by a series of dots |

Could you post a copy of the document (with sensitive information removed) so someone can take a look at it?
How to attach a screenshot or file in this forum. |

When I look at your Heading 1 style, I see a dot leader in the second tab stop.
The "10" moves past your first tab stop. It looks like your style is based on a TOC style. 00 deleteme 3.png 00 deleteme 4.png 00 deleteme 1.png Changing the first tab stop to .5 seems to cure this problem. 00 deleteme 5.png 00 deleteme 2.png The numbering inserts a tab after the number to separate the text from the number. Note, you have this style set to automatically update based on formatting. This is generally a bad idea. (I got the dot leader to appear at the end of entries that did fit by pressing the tab key at the end of the heading, just to show you that it is there in all of your headings, not just the ones that were giving you problems.) Thanks
I didn’t know or even suspect any of the aspects you mention (tabs, filling), just relying on my intuition to try Multilevel list to work. So I removed all tabs in heading styles and everything works. But I notice now that, due to what you mention "The numbering inserts a tab after the number to separate the text from the number", the space between number and wording suddenly increase to the "next" tab when numbering is wide enough. Is there any way to cancel that behaviour? I only want a fixed number of blanks between number and text. I unchecked automatic formatting for styles as well thanks Last edited by amc; 10-22-2017 at 11:50 AM. Reason: I forgot the attachment |
