Add text from file to new file
Hi there, I create new documents but want to insert a link of some sort that brings text from another file into this new document. the text is a standard paragraph that changes from time to time so all the documents it has been linked to needs to update automatically too. I don't know what the name of this function is so word help files are totally useless (like most of the time). This new link should not automatically relate to all new documents I create, that would be annoying. Anyone can help pls? |

Please don't trash my software buying decisions while asking for assistance. There are many inexpensive books that would serve as tutorials better than a Help database.
As it has been done in Microsoft Office products since version 2000: Select the text or object and copy it. Go to the destination location and paste a link. To find Paste Link in Word 2007: use the Paste drop-down to select Paste Special. Then choose Paste Link. |

Thank you Kimberly, I was thinking about the Hyperlink option but it does not update the destination if I change the master document. Also the destination is a Hyperlink format with the underline, something that may be undesirable. I was thinking along the lines of entering a code which then retrieves the master text and insert into a new document. I just can't remember the name of the function... place...something. Similar to what is used when you do Mail Merge.
I am not quite sure what you meant by "don't trash my software buying decisions...", I guess the smiley at the end substitutes body language, which are a bit of a problem with electronic communication. I have many books on microsoft, enough to constitute a small library, but in cases like this it does not help much when one does not know the name of the function. I google things a lot, quickest. Thank you again for your help Kimberly, please advice if you have other ideas. |

Not hyperlink!! This has absolutely nothing to do with hyperlinks.
Paste Special > Paste Link. Did you try it? Probably HTML format would be fine, but there are multiple format options. This is how we display content in one file that actually resides in another file, so that when the source file changes, the other file will update. Sometimes you might need to right-click on the content and choose Update, or you can select the document and press the F9 key to make sure all sources are updated. Again, this has absolutely nothing to do with hyperlinks. I don't have another idea since this is how it is done. There are other series of steps to paste link, but it's still paste link. I don't know what function you are talking about. A function is a small program that either performs an action or returns a value. |

AAhh, thanks Kimberly, first time I pasted the link as "Word Hyperlink" instead of Microsoft Office Word Document Object. Works now as I wanted, thanks. the destination file is updated when the source changes are saved.
