Unhappy Saving Office 2003 .rtf file in Office 2007

I began a document in Rich Text Format (in order to avoid all the extra stuff that Word inserts into a document otherwise) in Office 2003 on Win XP. I have now gotten a new computer that runs Windows 10. I have Office 2007 because I bought that for my laptop, which came with Vista.

Here is my issue. I'm not doing anything fancy in my document but every single time I want to save it, a dialog box opens that talks about losing a feature because it is not a a more Word-specific type of document. I like working in .rtf. It makes it much easier to copy from MS Word and, say, paste into a web page text box.

How can I keep this file a .rtf file but stop Word from asking this question every single time I do ctrl-s? Thanks.

Duncan

You don't.
  • You can open the rtf document.
  • You can edit it.
  • You can save as rtf.
  • You cannot prevent Word from asking if you really want to do this.

Hmmm. I don't get a prompt when saving an RTF format document in any Word version from 2003 to 2016. The document should open in compatibility mode and provided you don't change that, it should not prompt.

Thanks. Sorry to take so long to get back to your response to my question. It is unfortunate that MS decided that this approach, rather than a more user-friendly approach. was the one they wanted to use. Then again, any company that produces such a complicated set of steps for pagination isn't interested in usability, so I should not be surprised.

GMayor,

Thanks. Perhaps my document is not in compatibility mode? How would I know and how can I change it if it isn't in compatibility mode?
