Default Word 2011 suddenly changes all my document's formatting

I do a lot of outlining in Word, and I don't like using the auto outline view. I prefer to do it myself, and I have done so with no problems for years.
Within the last month, something has changed. Now when I type new info, and then insert a tab or drag a tab to reposition the new text (change the outline level), Word automatically lines up all of my previous text at one tab position (effectively eliminating the outline). If I click the "Undo" arrow, the formatting will return to normal (most of the time), but who wants to hit undo every 30 seconds or so?
Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone know a solution?
Thanks, Greydoc
