I'm using Word 2003 and have a problem with captioning tables and figures in appendixes. I have six levels of headers; header level 1 is for chapter titles. Appendix titling is level 7. For a table or figure caption in, for example, chapter 1, I go to Insert->Reference->Caption, choose "Include chapter number," "Chapter shows Heading 1," and show hyphen.
So my first table is captioned "Table 1-1. [Name of Table]" and all subsequent tables throughout my document are correctly numbered. Until I get to the appendixes. Let's say I have Appendix A, with the appropriate section break before, and I want my first table to be "Table A-1. [Name of Table]." I go through the same routine for inserting a caption, but now I change "Chapter shows Heading 1" to "Chapter shows Heading 7." That correctly numbers the first table in Appendix A as Table A-1. Unfortunately, Word now goes back and renumbers EVERY table to begin with Heading 7. So Table 1-1 now becomes Table A-1, and every other table caption throughout the document gets renumbered with Heading 7. What am I doing wrong? How can I retain Heading 1 captioning in my chapters while having Heading 7 captioning in my appendixes? |
