Default Page-numbering question: continue numbering from one section to the next? {PAGE} of {SECTIONPAGES}

Hi all. Here is my situation: I have a Word 2013 doc and it has a section break after the first five page's "i" thru "v" pages. On the sixth page I restart the numbering, using the "Page 1 of X" format. It works great like this so long as I used the field codes of:

{ PAGE } of { SECTIONPAGES}

In other words, in my 20-page (actual) document, that sixth page correctly shows "Page 1 of 15" and the last page shows as "Page 15 of 15". This is all great.

But now I have a problem because I needed to format part of one page in there to be two columns, which from what I know can only be achieved by bracketing that text with "continuous" section breaks. So now the numbering is screwed up:
  • On pages lower than the 2-column section, the "of 15" changes to show the number of pages only up to the next section break. (I know why this is happening of course. It's displaying the # of pages in that section.)
  • On ever page beyond the 2-column section, both the page numbering itself resets to 1 and the "total" count resets to however many pages remain in the doc.

Is there a way (a field?) for the numbering to continue as before and count up to the end correctly, across these newly inserted section breaks? FYI, I tried Format page numbering > Continue from previous list for the subsequent sections but it has no effect.

To continue...

It had occurred to me that one solution might be to simply place the 2-column text in a 2-column table and make it's boundaries invisible. I've actually done this before. Works fine when I've wanted to shorten the page take-up of a long bulleted list. I'm not sure how well it'll work across multiple pages. Maybe if I allow the rows to split across pages.... Hmm.

But anyway, I'd still appreciate an answer to the question in my first post. If anyone knows a solution.

First, you will need to unlink each Section's header from the preceding one. Having done that, insert a field coded along the lines of:
{SET Sctn1 {SECTIONPAGES}}
in your first Section's header. Then in your second section's header, use a field coded as:
{PAGE} of {={NUMPAGES}-Sctn1}

See attached demo.

Thank you Paul for the demo doc! That's very helpful. Much appreciated. I'm hanging onto this for future reference.

I found out yesterday afternoon that there is less of a need for the "...of Y" page numbering in this particular doc. It's a template actually, that I am developing for a company. So I found out this template is for doc types that don't typically run over 15-20 pages in total length. So simple page numbering with no start-overs is fine.

I also asked specifically how they plan to use this two columns in a doc. Reason is just to be able to have bulleted lists in two columns if need be. It's nothing that would spill onto a second page. So in the template I'm suggesting an alternate method of doing this as well: the two-column 'invisible' table to contain the text.

Now I am having another problem with the simpler "Page X" numbering. The numbering wants to start over after the continuous breaks. I've even deleted the numbering and re-inserted numbering a couple of times, but the page after the one containing the two breaks is always "Page 2". It ignores the fact that "Continue from previous list" is set. What a PITA.

I'm kinda new to Word 2013 actually. Only had it about a two years and docs I have been writing were pretty simple up until now. But years ago I put together a 100+ page doc for my team using Word 2003 and it had numerous section breaks throughout, because some pages had to be flipped to landscape for diagrams. I don't recall having this kind of headache with numbering on that doc.

Can you attach a document demonstrating that?

The footer numbering for Section 3 - which starts & ends on the same page - has its numbering set to start at 1 instead of continuing from the previous Section.

Might be where I'm confused. The one that says "Page 4", at the bottom of where the two breaks are is labeled "Footer for Section 2". The next page then jumps to "Footer for Section 3" is kind of in limbo I guess.

This is what has had me fooled. I though Page 4 showed the same footer as on "Page 1". But if I reset it to 'Continue from..." everything works as desired.

Yes, you'd need to insert a temporary page break into Section 3 so you can access its footer.

Nice! That works great. I have not used a page-break character in years. Just got out of the habit. Interesting to see it has a use for me once again.

Thanks again!

Instead, you need to use a field like:
{SET Sctn1 {SECTIONPAGES}}
in your document's first Section (i.e. the Section with the roman numerals for page #s). Then in your second & subsequent sections, use a field coded as:
{PAGE} of {={NUMPAGES}-Sctn1}
There is no need to unlink those subsequent Sections' footers from each other.

See attached.
Hi. Bringing this thread back from the dead. I had to stop work on this field code stuff for a few weeks, before I was able to try it. Now it's become a priority.

I was able to add this bookmark FC in the first section. Works great. I have a bookmark containing the sum of those i through v pages:
{SET Sctn1 {SECTIONPAGES}}

But in the subsequent sections I confess that I don't know how to change the field codes successfully. Just don't know the exact steps.

My fumbling in "Formula" got me as far as this:

Using this dialog box:

But it just produces this syntax error:

OTOH, This is from macropod's sample doc above and works great:

Can someone walk me through the process of creating the custom field(s) correctly?

You can't create the fields via the dialogue box - you need to create them in the document itself, using Ctrl-F9 to create the field braces.

Excellent. One again, thank you Paul. I have it working correctly now.

It's funny. At first I was getting an "off by one" error. The last page said "15 of 16". It's because of the cover page, which wasn't being counted among the 'Roman' pages due to a section break on that first page. So I tried putting in a 'minus 1' at the end of the field, like so:

{PAGE} of {={NUMPAGES}-Sctn1-1}

Works fine.
