Default Trouble with Hyperlinks

Documentation seems to tell me I can use a hyperlink to redirect to another place in the document, a website, or a file on the computer/devise. All I want my link to do is open another PDF located in the same place the calling PDF is. (Ideally all files on a portable drive)

It does work for an internet link and for a direct address... c:\FILES\FILENAME.PDF
It is supposed to work for a relative address

When I do this in MS-Word 2013 I try FILENAME.PDF or \FILENAME.PDF in the link address for the hyperlink. MS-Word is changing that to an internet type address with a forward slash (/). Of course the hyperlink does not work when I save as PDF.

Any way to get this done??

Thank you
