Default Numbered lists, even numbers only

I'm going to an online college, and one of the common homework themes is to do the even or odd numbered problems in a textbook. Putting in the numbers starts an auto format list, but it advances the numbers up by one. Thus far, my only options are to let it create a regularly numbered list, then change the numbers myself manually, or to turn off auto formatting to create the list manually myself.

Is there any way to create an auto numbered list that will only use even or odd numbers?

This isn't elegant or cool, but you can do this:

Go into Excel

In cells A1, A2, and A3 enter 1, 3, 5...

Now do a Fill Series (this automatically done by default) those numbers down as a group to say A15 (or ever how many questions you have)

Once done, you can do such things in Excel as select this group, then go to Numbering, and select treating the numbering as Text, so this will enable you to make your numbers 1., 3., 5....

Go into Word, and Paste Special and then select Paste as "Unformatted Text" so you will see 1, 3, 5, 7, and so on

Treat this numbering the same as with any numbering now

I just tried that, but didn't seem to work very well. The fill series took the next number up, and added the even numbers as well. I'm not ungrateful for you're help, and I do appreciate it, but this would actually be more work than changing them in Word in the first place.

Schools often only assign the odd or even numbers due to the answers to the odd or even questions being given in the textbook. It seems odd that MS wouldn't have a way to do this in auto-format.

Hello Mnementh,

my suggestion is to use automatic numbering.

But behind all even numbers just put empty space.

Then change the color of the line to white and it is done.

If you need a comprehensive tutorial, just click on the link bellow.

I hope it helped, if not, let me know. mike
