Equation Editor-Font size changes without control

I am writing a book with many equations.

Sometimes when I create an equation on a line by itself and then add an equation number outside of the equation box, the font of the equation reduces from 11 to 9. Further, I cannot reset the font size.

This does not happen on all equations.
