non-breaking ] and [
Somehow, I manage to end a line in the middle of something which must stay together. Word thinks that it is a good idea to just cut it in between the ] and [ and continue on a new line.
I know the non-breaking space, dash, etc. How do I get a non-breaking [ and ]? Are ( and ) always non-breaking? How about { and }? Thanks! Niels |

Unless you have a space after the [ or before the ], Word will ordinarily keep them with the following and preceding characters, respectively. None of ()[]{}<>«»‘’“”/|\ is ordinarily treated as a character that wraps to the next line.

There's a field code bevore the ]. I think that's what causes word to break the text in two...

You appear to have an equation there, not a field. No matter, Word doesn't ordinarily treat the characters I mentioned any differently for either of those. I suspect you have a trailing space in the equation - impossible to tell from a screenshot.

Hmmm. I have uploaded a word file with that equation copy/pasted into it. Would you mind to take a brief look?

It seems you do have fields - EQ fields - and they're not playing nicely. A workaround would be to put the trailing ] inside the field code (e.g. {EQ \o (4;−])}) with the ] in your normal font.

It looks better now, but there's a space that shouldn't be there before the last 4 and the minus sign. It's only there in print (or pdf), not in the word file.

When I look at the field code in the document you attached, there is a space before the '-'.

Edit: added a space after the four and that works Thanks! Edit2: found another "funny" one: a middle dot starts on a new line where it shouldn't do that. |

Try coding the second field as:
{EQ [B(C6F5)\o (4,−)]} including your original subscripting & superscripting. This incorporates your entire formula into the field.

I'm not sure what you mean and that C6F5 formula seems fine now. The second one, which ends with [middle dot]H2O, is not.

Thanks Unfortunately, if I copy and paste it into my thesis file, word ends the line after the first ] and starts a new one with [. The entire formula should be on the same line.

That's because I treated the two[*] blocks as separate equations. They can just as easily be incorporated into a single EQ field, though. See attached.
