Default Page numbering. Help?

Heeeeellllpppppp!

I am trying to put pages in a document starting at page 8. Page 8 will be my page 1.

I can put the page number in , that shows "1". Page 2 onwards doesn't show the number at the bottom.

If I put Page number "2" in it appears, but then numbers appear on pages 1-7. If I delete page nos 1-7, then page 2 onwards also gets removed.

I am not an expert in word, and trying to format the layout of a book. This problem has been plaguing me for a while, and despite reading numerous tips online, no further forward. Any help would be great!

Nope, doing the same again.

I cleared all breaks, put one in as per the site.

Numbering ends up going in the pages I don't want it to, or not being able to sort the document pages out.

Is there any other sites with step by step pictures?

must be missing something

You have the setting for "different first page" checked where you are trying to start your numbering. This means that you have two different footers in that section. You either have to stop the "different first page" setting or add the numbers in the regular footer. Both have to not be "linked to the previous" footers.
Header/Footer Settings Recap

The link that Paul gave you is an excellent resource for what you are trying to do.
