odd behavior of word 2010 under windows 10
I have been using Word 2010 for a long time now. Recently however I got a new laptop. The only variables that have changed are I am now using a 1080p monitor and, whereas previously I was using Windows 7, now I'm using Windows 10.
When I work on Word documents I use Web Layout. I have wordwrap and line justification enabled. Since moving to my new system I am having a couple of problems I can't figure out: 1) As I work on editing paragraphs, Word seems to be randomly moving the horizontal scrollbar to the right, so that the text on the left side of my document ends up hidden "off the page" as I'm working. To correct this I have to continually move the horizontal scrollbar back to the left manually. 2) I frequently seem to be "losing" text as I am working. So far as I know I have not myself deleted the text. If I am pressing something accidentally which is causing this to happen I don't know what it could be. I can retrieve the text with "undo" but the troubling thing is I can't figure out why this is happening. I didn't experience either of these issues on my previous system. Does anyone have any ideas about how I might fix the problem? Thanks for your help. |

Why do you not work in Page Layout view as the program intended?

Hi Macropod,
Thanks for helping me troubleshoot this. I am using an external keyboard, so I'm not sure how the trackpad could come into play, but I have disabled the trackpad now and will see if it makes a difference for the deletion issue. It is still periodically doing the horizontal scroll "jump to the right" as I work though, pushing the part of the text on the left outside the visible window. Could you clarify more what you mean about the application window being too big for the screen? i am not using Word in full screen. It is just taking up a small portion of my screen (centered in the middle). Could this be related to the 1080p screen somehow? |

I was thinking in terms of part of the Word window being off-screen; given your clarification, that doesn't seem to be the case here. I doubt monitor resolution, per se, has anything to do with it. A faulty display driver is a possibility, though.

Ok, I think I have discovered the source of the problem--now it is just a matter of how to fix it.
Looking at my Microsoft Word horizontal scrollbar I notice there is is a square's worth of "extra space" there, which is larger than the actual page. When I am working on a document the scollbar is normally to the far right, but ocasionally it jumps to the far left to fill that "empty square" and when it does this, the first letters of my paragraphs get pushed off of the left side into nowhere. is there some way I can set the horizontal width of the page so that the width of the horizontal scrollbar is flush with the page itself? It seems like if there was some way I could do this, it would stop the problem. |
