What's your favorite version of word?
Hey guys!
I'm just curious because sometimes newer isn't always better and I'm thinking about switching from 2010. What is your favorite version of MS Word? And why? |

My 1st choice is Word 2010 - better interface than its successors and more stable than Word 2016, especially.
My 2nd choice is Word 2003. FWIW, I have ready access to all Office versions, from 2000 onwards.

I would agree with Paul's choices. Word 2013 and 2016 have some nice features but also have drawbacks.
Word 2007 was never a good choice. Word 2003 is solid. Unless you have a reason to change from Word 2010, I would not do that. I have access to the following: Word 97, 2003, 2010, 2013 and 2016. I do most of my work in Word 2010. |

Word 2010 is also much faster than later versions. If (say) you need Word to write data to Excel, Word 10 is around 6 times faster than 2016 using the same macro code. Updating to a later version is an answer to a problem you don't have. The correspondents in this thread all have a variety of versions to provide support for those versions. My guess is that you don't need that.
I too would work in 2010 (and do in Excel), but it is difficult to get Word 2010 to stay as default version when there are later versions present as Office 2016 updates (of which there are many) force the default back to 2016, whatever your preference. Sometimes it is easier to go with the flow.

My favorite version of Word is 2000. I have Office 2000 Premium 4 CD set in my possession and Office 2007 Enterprise also. But I have an affinity towards Office 2000, because it was the first version of Office that I used with (GASP) WINDOWS ME...!

Since you're on Win7, I'd say stick with Office 2010. Those two would have been developed around the same time, which helps with stability between OS and apps.
I've used Office 365 since it launched, here for what it's worth are notes I made re the main Office changes over the years: - What Office 2013 has v 2010 - More sharing plus device and cloud integration. - Improved interface. - Some touchscreen functionality. - Collapsible ribbon. - Customizing ribbon easier, relatively simple now. - Word - PDF editing. - Word - better DTP features. - What Office 2016 has v 2013 - Nothing major, nice changes. Built from the ground-up with mobile and cloud users in mind, good for teams. - Core products get a "Tell me" function which is useful. - Excel got rid of the dumb all caps ribbon text. - Improved colors in interface. |
