When I am editing a Word file that is stored in OneDrive, the current state of the document doesn't get saved to the cloud until I close the document.


It is not enough to click the save button.
It doesn't seem to matter if I open the doc from local storage, or from the cloud.
So if I work on a document for two or three hours straight, that means no cloud backup and no versioning, unless I remember to close the doc a few times in the middle.

I am talking about the desktop version of Office, not the online version.

Any way around this problem? I tried the SaveInTwoPlaces add-on, but I couldn't get it to work in Word 2016.

This does not work with Documents (or backup locations) on OneDrive. It does however work happily with Word 2016 using local folders. I have updated the add-ins for Word and Excel to error trap this issue.

However and more to the point, you asked about versioning. http://www.gmayor.com/SaveVersionsAdd-In.htm will work with One Drive and includes a version for Excel also.

I used "Save In Two Places Ver 2.4.dotm".
With Save In Two Places Ver 2.4.dotm, Word crashed.
This was my method: I opened the Word doc from a local folder, and the "second place" was OneDrive.

I think I will try SaveVersionsAdd-In

As I said, Save in Two Places is not compatible with One Drive (either for the main document or the backup location).
