Default Specifications created in various versions of Word. Cannot copy and paste and have turn out ok.

Boss suggested that I create one long document in order to take advantage of automatic Table of Contents. Many of the spec sections were created long ago, likely using different versions of Word. When I attempt to copy and paste, fonts do not copy, formatting does not copy, etc. It was a great idea, but it didn't work. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

The easiest way to set up a table of contents is to format headings with the built-in heading styles. Is that what you have been doing?

What is the specific problem you are seeing with formatting? Are you pasting content from different locations in the same document or content from another source?

I'm pasting from document sections created through the years in Word. The goal was to combine all sections into one document. In the attempt, however, everything changes. My solution might be to retype everything (over 100 pages) and use built-in heading styles as I go. I had hoped to not have to do that.

If the original documents were mixtures of paragraph styles and direct formatting, a lot of manual "fixing" will be required after you have combined the documents into one. There is no way around that, I'm afraid. Applying styles is the most stable fix, although it may be time-consuming, as you have noticed.
