Default I have a document which needs one field changed throughout

The word document I am working on is a book. That book has a character who is thinking. Instead of ITALIC these thoughts are currently in 'QUOTE MARKS'.

I need a simple way to go through the book changing the text between 'QUOTE MARKS' to ITALICS. I also need to remove the 'QUOTE MARKS' as I go through the document.

The replace function is the simplest option (CTRL+H)

With the wildcard option checked search for

'(*)'
replace with
\1
and with the cursor in the replace box click CTRL+I (italics)

You can then step through the document replacing the texts as required.

Better still create a character style with the attributes you require, then instead of applying italics apply the style. Then when you want to change your mind and format in a different manner you can simply change the style settings and that will be reflected throughout.

Thank you. I have done as you instructed and the fix is happening automatically. Is there a way I can step though one at a time by clicking a button?

Click on the Find Next button then on the Replace button if you want it done on that find, and on the Find Next button if you want to skip to the next without a replacement.

Thank you. What you describe is what I would like to do. Unfortunately, when I place the cursor in the replace box and click CTRL+I (italics) the word document will not let me make any changes while it goes through the entire document changing the text.

I watch as it changes the wrong text to italics but can do nothing to stop it. Is there something wrong with my word?

1. When I click the cursor in the replace box click CTRL+I (italics) word locks up while the courser goes through the entire document making changes. The only way to stop this is to close the program losing all of the changes.
2. Also, the fix doesn't always change the correct text. Sometimes it leaves a 'quotation mark' at the end of a paragraph and changes the next paragraph to italic. This would be ok if I could step through the document making decisions manually but I'm always locked out.
