Default First page header appearing on 4th page

Hello,

I have a template with 4 pages, each with different headers. My problem is that when I enter data and press return to go to the next page, i.e. between page 3 and 4, I find that the cover page header comes up and not the header from page 3?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Caroline

"Press Enter and go to a new page' is not a regular word function.

Are you by any chance starting a new section? If so, you need to go into that section's header and first turn off "different first page."

Hi Charles,

I don't think that I was very clear, I meant that when I naturally go to the next page due to filling up the previous with text content. I was just pressing enter to get to the next page for testing purposes.

I am not starting a new section, I am hoping that the header from page 3 automatically copies onto page 4 when I need an additional page, but this does not happen.

Is this clear? If not, I will try to add an example.

Thanks

Yes, it is more clear. Take a look at the link I gave you.
Check the settings in your header/footer tools tab for:
  1. Different first page
  2. Different Even and Odd
  3. Link to previous
Note the type of header. If it is a first-page header, an even-page header, or an odd-page header, that will be reflected in the label on the line separating the header from the body of the document. Read the linked article again. Come back and tell us what you are seeing.

If it can't be worked out, you could try the Word Toolkit for Advanced Management of Word Headers and Footers which can tell you more about what is going on.

  • You can manually add a page break with Ctrl+Enter.
  • If you are seeing four different headers, then you have at least one Section break. This is true even if you had no intention of inserting one. Inserting section breaks is one way (the wrong way) many people use to change what shows up in the header.
  • Display the hidden formatting marks to see better what is going on. Showing non-printing formatting marks in Microsoft Word
  • Also, look into using the StyleRef Field to change the displayed content of a header/footer without changing the header/footer in Word.
