While I am certain that there is a limit, it is large. What is your concern?

It's a limit. What makes you think it needs increasing?

Again, what are your concerns? What are you doing where you would need more than 16,000 bookmarks in a document?
There may well be a way to do what you want that does not require that many bookmarks. |

I have a document which is of arround 300 pages and we have to bookmark more than 14000 words in that. i am getting value out of range exception at 12972 only right now.
i am using word 2007. |

That suggests you're doing something far less efficiently than it out be done. For what purpose are you creating so many bookmarks?

What Paul said...
Why are you bookmarking these words? What do you hope to achieve by doing that? The reason you are reaching the limit is because Word also creates hidden bookmarks for other purposes like cross-referencing. |

our application is a proofreading application we flag all the grammatical mistakes and try to bookmark them. document does have that many Grammtical issues. i am not sure why it is failing at 12972 only.

Again, Word creates its own bookmarks that are "hidden." They are included in the limit.
A bookmark is an individual mark. How about something more generic like a character style (which need not look any different from surrounding text). You could add shading to that style so that they could be seen. Then remove the shading to hide your marking if you want. Word's find can locate style instances. |

A 300-page document with 16000+ grammatical errors???? That's around 10% of the document being flagged as grammatical errors! That suggests either an atrocious document or you're using the wrong grammar-checking rules for it. What is the purpose of bookmarking the grammatical errors?

Alternate to Bookmarking
Is there any alternative to bookmarks to navigate in word?
Thanks |

Yes, but you might not like them. For example, you could insert formfields and apply 'filling in forms' protection. That way, the document will open at the first formfield and tabbing will take you to the next one.
Of course, you could also use a Table of Contents, but even that creates (hidden) bookmarks. There is also Outline view - assuming you're using Heading Styles appropriately.

So, there is no better alternative to bookmark you say. Because we have lot of bookmarks, which is taking long time to insert and also to delete. so we are trying to get rid of bookmarks and use any other alternatives.
