Word Source/Binary Code?
Is it possible to alter the underlying code of a Word document to essentially 'mask' the text/characters used? Meaning it retains its appearance visually but if it were to be scanned by software (i.e. something like Turnitin) it would not be recognised.
Any answers would be much appreciated. |

ANY written, music or video material that you can see (or hear) can be copied. The best that you can manage is to make it a tad less convenient to do so. If you could make copying impossible, the media industry alone would reward you beyond the wildest dreams of Croesus.
You could create a PDF with protection against copying or printing - e.g. see http://www.gmayor.com/pdfcreator_addin.htm - but it is by no means foolproof. Just like locking the doors of your house won't stop someone breaking a window to gain entry.

Sounds to me like you want help cheating. Don't expect any help here with that.

So what's a legitimate reason for trying to defeat Turnitin?

I was only using Turnitin as an example, there's other types of software that sort through Word docs to determine the text and I wanted to insert a message in the actual source code that would only be readable to a few.

In that case, embed whatever you want into a document variable; they're only editable by code and, in the document itself, can only be displayed via DOCVARIABLE fields - and then only if you know the document variable's name. A more flexible but less secure storage medium would be a custom document property; they're accessible via File|Info|Properties>Advanced Properties>Custom and, if you want, can be displayed via DOCPROPERTY fields.
