Default Document resisting page numbers

Office Word 2010. I have an approximately 250 page book manuscript. I am attempting to format it in a 6"X9" format that I downloaded from Amazon Kindle for publication as a paper back. I copied and pasted from an 8.5X11" format that I created. The original document was paginated which was lost when I copied and pasted into the new format.

So far the new document is resisting everything I have attempted at applying page numbers to the smaller page format. I can get one number but when I go to page formatting and enter the starting point and the number, nothing happens. I am far, far from being an expert at Word although I have used it for over twenty years, usually applying the same types of formatting commands routinely. I need some help. Page Numbers in Word 2007-2016
Keep in mind that page numbers are a creature of headers and footers. You need to know where they are and what kinds are there. Every Word Section contains three headers and three footers none of which may be displayed since a page can have multiple sections. Header/Footer Settings Recap

There is a free tool available that can help you figure out where your page numbers are and where the sections are. Word Toolkit for Advanced Management of Word Headers and Footers

Post more about what is going on for actual help. "It isn't working" is not quite specific enough.

Thank you Charles for the reassurance. I have been unsuccessful at installing the Word Toolkit due to issues related to macros. However, I will attempt to better clarify my situation.
I created a three section manuscript document in an 8.5" X 11" page format. Sections 2 and 3 were paginated separately. I then copied and pasted the entire document onto a word file that I downloaded from Amazon Kindle in hopes of creating a 6" X 9" paper back book from the document. None of the pagination was visible in the new document.

More information: I then deleted the the first two sections and have attempted to paginate the only remaining section using what I consider to be a standard protocol for pagination. Should I delete all headers and footers and begin again?

Thanks in advance.

I have had some success. I created an entirely new document and set my own dimensions at 6 x 9. then I copied and pasted the original into that one and then removed all but one section along with all headers and footers. Then I paginated the remaining document successfully. Now I intend to add the first two sections back and paginate them separately after establishing section breaks.

I know this sounds all convoluted and it probably is, but the bottom line is that I now have page numbers again. Hopefully I won't have to bother anyone else with my efforts at being self-taught in Word.

This forum and others like it are for people being self-taught on Word. Most of the answers come from such people as well. This is a peer-support forum.

At least scan the entire article that I linked to earlier. It is about Sections. Headers/Footers, page size, margins and page numbers are all a part of Sections.

It sounds like you followed the easiest course to get your result. I am always leery of templates from publishers. They may be wonderful, or a nightmare.

For the toolkit to work, it will need to be placed in a "trusted location." Your Word Startup Folder should be such a location. I use that particular tool about once every couple of weeks.

Thanks Charles. I have copied and pasted it into the Startup Folder and will try it. By the way, my novice efforts at formatting have finally worked. My document now has three separate sections, each with its own unique pagination. Life is good.
You've been a huge help.
