Default Document resisting page numbers

Office Word 2010. I have an approximately 250 page book manuscript. I am attempting to format it in a 6"X9" format that I downloaded from Amazon Kindle for publication as a paper back. I copied and pasted from an 8.5X11" format that I created. The original document was paginated which was lost when I copied and pasted into the new format.

So far the new document is resisting everything I have attempted at applying page numbers to the smaller page format. I can get one number but when I go to page formatting and enter the starting point and the number, nothing happens. I am far, far from being an expert at Word although I have used it for over twenty years, usually applying the same types of formatting commands routinely. I need some help.
