Smile Corrupted word documents after converting pdf files to word

Received pdf documents and used an online site to convert these to word. It worked but the documents now contain lots of symbols, like music ones, and so do all of my word documents. Very annoying when trying to edit although they print out ok. I have Office 10
Do I delete this and install a new version of Office 10 or is there a way to solve this?
Many thanks

Quibble: It is Office 2010, not 10.

Conversions never work well when you want to edit the end product. They can help, but the resulting document is almost always filled with anomalies.

When you create a new document, do you have the same problem?

How about if you start Word in safe mode?

Also, look at Showing non-printing formatting marks in Microsoft Word.
