How to make image control behave like Word's example?

I am trying to mimic the sometimes hard to duplicate behavior of an object used in an MS Word 2013 example - the insert image control, which allows users to click on an icon to bring up a file selection window so they can insert an image from their hard drive into a document.

In the control that comes with the example document (in this case, my example document from Office Online is "invoice timeless"), there is a nifty bar on the top, with text that says "click icon at right to replace logo", and a small icon to the right of the text that when clicked, opens the file browser. I like this functionality, as it is clean and clear for the user.

However, when one simply pastes an image control from the Design toolbar into their document, they get a control with an MS Paint-looking icon right smack in the middle that one clicks on to open the file browser - not the smaller icon that comes active in the example from Office Online.

I can't figure out how MS is implementing this different functionality in their example. Can anyone shed light on the mystery?
