the typing REF thing you mentioned was how I tried to do it. It didn't work in the slightest. Just disappeared, as described earlier, when I restricted editing. Before that, it didn't reference anything, ever. |

It won't do anything when you first create it and, as for the disappearing upon protection, if whatever its referencing is empty I would expect the reference to be empty too (i.e. to disappear). That's perfectly normal. That said, 'empty' formfields normally contain a series of spaces (i.e. unless you change the default).
