Is this guy using Word for statistical analysis? Can it be done? Why not Excel?
Hi guys,
Nice to be able to join your forums. I'm a long time user of Word as a word processor. It never occurred to me to use it for anything else and certainly not statistical analysis or sorting of data. So, I'm trying to decipher what some user on another forum is saying in this post: Quote:
This was all very puzzling to me. Could anyone here be able to shed some light on this or give their interpretation? Can Word indeed be used for doing statistical analysis on data? I've always used Excel for this kind of stuff. Can there be any advantages over using Word instead of Excel for analysis? Thanks so much in advance! Best. Johan Nes |

Most likely whoever it is has some software that outputs reports to Word. Word really isn't designed for doing statistical analyses. Still, if you really, really, really want tot go down that path, you can see how to do a wide range of calculations in Word via field coding in my Microsoft Word Field Maths Tutorial:

Hi, macropod,
Thank you! I was not able to access that file without registering at that other forum, but I will see if I can get to it tomorrow. 1. Do you happen to have any knowledge of what type of software that outputs reports to Word? A quick search gives the impression that this is possible with some of the available programs for statistics. Not sure what the benefit would be in exporting it to Word, though. 2. For some reason, I've gotten the impression that perhaps he's doing his own calculations "manually", so it might be he's doing that directly in Word? Is it possible to set up tables in Word for sorting data like you can do with tables in Excel? FWIW, I will probably stick to Excel myself. Just trying to get a sense of what he might have been doing. Thanks in advance! John |

I seriously doubt anyone is using Word to perform anything more than rudimentary statistical analyses (e.g. calculating averages).
As for what statistical software outputs to Word, you'd have to look at each product's specifications. And, depending on what the user you refer to is doing, automation could be used to transfer statistical summaries/charts that get output to Excel, for example, from there to Word. And, yes, Word can sort table data.

Thanks, man.
I guess I may conclude that what he's doing then is probably getting reports from some other kind of software solution. |
