Default Numbered headings not working as expected after customising headings

I customised the headings to make the relationship between them clearer (some of the defaults were hard to tell which was a heading which was a subheading).

I now want the headings to be numbered in the relationship:

1. Heading
1.1 Subheading

1.1.1 Subsubheading

When I follow the instructions here: https://support.office.com/en-gb/art...ad=GB&fromAR=1

it affects only the first heading and none of those below it:

Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.

Your headings should be set up following (all of) the directions given in the first link posted by JimP.
How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly

That is the bible when it comes to automatic list numbering, especially multi-level.

Thanks for your responses. They've pretty much covered everything but one thing. I've underlined it in the following screenshot - the gap between 1.1.2.1 and I-Sce is too small for my liking and I can't find a setting that controls that distance.

That distance is controlled by the tab settings in the style and the indent set in the numbering. Note that if your first number were 1.1.2.12 chances are there would be a much bigger break and it would be lined up above Architecture.

Thanks, Charles. I set 'text position for first level' to 2 cm (after clicking 'set for all levels') and I think the result is okay.
