Hi turak,
I assume both chapters are in the same document. Are you sure you're viewing the header/footer for the first page of Chapter 2 and not the header/footer for the last page of Chapter 1?

I found out how to do it
I traced the problem back to a year ago... the guy at the shop monkeyed with my MS word 2003: he put in some garbage version without notifying me.
The MS word I have now doesn't have the 'save as previous' button... but I finally managed to find out how to create a new chapter heading on a document. You won't believe it but in order to start a new chapter heading: I have to leave my mouse indicator at the end of a chapter and then I go to Page Setup and click on 'Preview' and then click on " This Point Forward". This effectively jumps my mouse- point over into a new page that is now... are you ready?... a new section in the document that has been magically created, without me going to 'Insert' and clicking on 'break' and going to the 'section break' part and clicking on 'Next Page'!! Then once my mouse pointer is on the OTHER side of this section break that was somehow magically created, I click on the 'Link to Previous' button in order to BREAK the existing link between the header to the rest of the document's headers. All this is done WITHOUT a 'same as previous button' because there is none. I have no clue which edition of MS word I now have on my computer, but it sure as hell isn't the one I had a year ago before I sent it to that @#$%^ ... I can't even find it on my 'Add/Remove' programs or anywhere else on my computer. He embedded this newer pirated version of Word and didn't leave a trace of where it is. I'm even missing MS Office now, which Word is supposed to be a part of. I found out how to fix the problem after 16 hours of hunting and searching every possible avenue. If you know which version of MS Word works like this does, let me know. |

Hi turak,
To find out which version of Word you have installed, simply go to Help|About. As for the lack of a 'Same as Previous' button on the toolbar, I suspect that's nothing more than a toolbar customization (which is easily fixed).

In Word 2003, the button you mention should be on the Header and Footer toolbar. If you can't see the toolbar, select it from View | Toolbars when you have activated the header/footer view. Or you could add the button back to the toolbar via Tools | Customize, if it is just missing.
Also, the button have different labels in different versions of Word: Same as Previous or Link to Previous. For what it's worth, Word automatically creates section breaks for you when you change section-specific formatting (such as page setup or columns) for the selected text; this is true for all versions (going back at least to Word 97).

Ah!
So the old 'same as previous has been changed to 'link to previous'
I've already got that on my toolbar, so I don't need to look for the other one. Just one thing: There is no customize option for the commands on the header/footer toolbar; you should know that. |

You seem to be very quick to find fault - first it was because you hadn't checked what the various Header & Footer toolbar buttons are for; then it was "the guy at the shop monkeyed with my MS word 2003: he put in some garbage version without notifying me" - which you've given no evidence of; and now it's that you think I should know something that actually isn't true. I think the fault, if one is to be found, is on your side of the keyboard.

Hi, I found the solution in the end. It was a matter of adding the button to the Header/Footer taskbar. While poking around, a checklist opened and I saw that the Link to Previous was unchecked. So I checked it and having inserted a continuous section break right at the top of my document, I was able to turn off the link to previous in the right place. Thank you for your help. Maren

I can think of no good reason to insert a continuous section break at the top of your document.

The document is intended to serve as a template. If I put the Section break at the bottom of the page, it might be pushed to the next page depending on the amount of text generated on the first page. By inserting the continuous break at the top, this problem goes away.

That still doesn't explain why you'd want such a Section break. If what you want is to have a header or footer that appears on only the first page - or on all pages other than the first - simply use a 'different first page' layout.
