How to make line numbers remain
Hi
I am working with a legal document which contains line numbers. I need to edit the document according to a list with amendments. This list of amendments describes the changes like below: Line 758: Before "consequence" insert "directly" When I make these changes I want the line numbers to remain the same in order for me to make sense of which lines are being referred to. I have attached a document to exemplify my issue. Is it possible that any of you experts could help me with this? Best regards Kasper |

Would it not be easier to get part of the line in the amendment and search the document for it?
Search for ILL Convention |

Using the PAGE LAYOUT ribbon, click on LINE NUMBERS from the PAGE SETUP portion of the ribbon...then select CONTINUOUS (or, whatever you desire).

If you want the changed information to be on the same line of the same page that it was on originally, that is not going to happen, at least not in Word.
Be aware of the Track Changes feature in Word. If you turn this feature on and then make your changes backwards (last change made first) you should be able to easily find what is to be changed and make the change. Tell Word to not display changes in balloons but in-line, at least for now. |

What I want is that should the insertions cause a new line to be created, I want this new line to not have a number. |

I am a lawyer. I have been using Word for more than 20 years. I seldom use line numbering. I would not attempt to do what you want. I would use Word's Track Changes features. If you print the result document showing changes, it is easy enough to follow and see what was changed and where. You might be able to get something like what you are requesting by saving your document as a pdf and then converting the pdf back to Word (requires Word 2013 or later or a third-party application). This will give you something that is incredibly difficult to edit but the line numbers will no longer automatically shift. |

The reason I was asking was that I'd been editing documents converted from PDF where the line numbers did not change. However, exactly as you mention, it is a mess to work with, which is why I tried to make this workaround. I've gotta try and find another way to do this. Have a nice weekend mate. |

I just tried saving as pdf and bringing it back. That does not work.
Printing, scanning and running through OCR might. |

Which OCR would you recommend?

I have no recommendation. The best OCR programs are likely to make these line numbers again rather than simple text, which is what you want. You mentioned that for you saving as pdf and bringing it back in worked. Use the way you did it. (When I did it on my system, I ended up with Word line numbers again rather than text.)
I also tried saving as text and saving as .rtf. |
