Default Page numbering across three sections - skipping one section

Does anyone know if it is possible to have three sections where section two has no numbers, but section three starts its page numbers, where section one ends.

Simple example:

Section one (text) has ten pages numbered 1 to 10
Section two (pictures) has ten pages with no numbers
Section three (continuing text) has ten pages numbered 11 to 20

Help would be appreciated.

See Page Numbers in Word 2007-2016 and Numbering Front Matter (Ribbon).
Page numbers are fields in headers/footers. You will want to uncheck the "Link to previous" settings in the headers/footers for your second and third sections.
Remove the page numbers from the second section by going into the header/footer that contains them and deleting them. Then go to the third section and format page numbering to start at the number you want for that section.

This is not completely dynamic. If your section one expands the page number will not change in your section 3. If you need something more dynamic, it can be done. Write back. The advantage to doing it this way is that the page numbers will be accurately reflected in a Table of Contents.

That's helpful. However, because I don't know how many pictures I'm going to add, is there a method that will keep the section three numbering in sequence with section one?

If it's complicated I'll stick to the method suggested.

Again, thanks for your help.

Yes, there is but the numbers will not, then, work in a ToC or Index.
See How to control the page numbering in a Word document and Page Numbering.

  1. You will need to insert a SectionPages field in your first section and bookmark that field. To insert such a field, type the word SectionPages and select it. Press Ctrl+F9. That makes it a field. Then press F9 to update it.
  2. Use Insert > Bookmark to mark it. You need to give it a name: i.e. Section1PageNumber. You can format that to be the color white but not "hidden."
  3. Go to the header/footer of the page where you want to restart the numbering and use Format Page Numbers to restart the numbering at 1.
  4. Then construct a field like the following { = { Page } + { Ref Section1PageNumber } } and press F9 to update it.
  • When you change the number of pages in your first section, you will need to select your SectionPages field and update it (F9). Ctrl+A followed by F9 may work for you.
  • Remember that you cannot simply type the field delimiters {}. You need to use Ctrl+F9 to insert them in pairs.
