Default Italics not "sticking" in Word 2011

I've been working on a long-ish manuscript (130 pages) using Word 2011 for Mac on a MacbookPro (still on Yosemite). The manuscript has 196 endnotes. The problem is that the titles of books that I have italicized (manually) do not "stick." Over and over and over again I have to re-italicize the titles. This has become a major problem because I have to constantly re-proof (and correct) the endnotes. I'm wondering if setting up a "character style" and applying it to the titles would make the italics stick better. Thoughts? And if I should go that route, how would I do it? I am using many different paragraph styles, but I've never used character styles.

Ideas?

No idea why your italics are falling off, but a character style might help. Here's a basic screenshot of a character style that just applies italic to the selected text; despite what the dialogue shows, I've only applied it to the title Sheet 252 Mechanical Specifications.

Note, though, that I've chosen to call it !cite. The name you choose isn't important, but what I would suggest is that you give the style a name showing it's intended for book titles. That way, you'll be able to search for titles quickly.

Thanks for the suggestion. Worth a try! Re-doing the work a zillion times over is tedious and frustrating (infuriating!).
I'll let you know if it works.

Might it be that Update Styles is checked and Normal is redefining itself occasionally? In any case, go with the character style.

The puzzling thing is that only SOME of the italicized titles revert to normal. Many of the other titles stay italicized. I cannot identify any consistent pattern. It is true, however, that certain titles often (but not always) present the problem and other titles never do. ???
In any event, I'm going to try the character style and see if it helps.
