Getting dots in the spacing between words

In Word documents I have started to get dots in the spacing between words. This happens with new and existing documents. This looks something like this: The+quick+brown+fox+jumped+over+the+lazy+dog except instead of the plus signs that I used in this example there are simply dots. I have "view" set to Print Layout. The documents print OK, i.e. the dots do not show up on the printed page but I still find this kind of annoying. I have run "repair" with the installation disk but that did not help. Any idea how to get back to normal spacing without the dots?
