Default Corrupted file? I'm unable to save changes to Word document

I made changes to an existing word document but cannot save and close.

Specifically:
I copy and pasted (as pictures) two selections from an excel spreadsheet. I selected save from the drop down menu and then tried to close the document. Instead of closing the doc, Word gives me a message window that asks if I want to save changes. I select yes and the message window closes but comes back immediately when i try again to close. The only way i can close the document is if I choose don't save.

The same thing happens regardless of what kind of changes I make.

This document is mostly a series of tables with several sections of excel pasted in as pictures. Does anyone know what is going on? I have several nearly identical documents that i just modified and they do not behave this way.

Word 2013 is not supposed to work on Windows XP. Just sayin'.

Lots of tables can cause problems.

Try creating a new document. Go into your existing document and go to the very end of the document. Insert a continuous section break (Page Layout tab - Breaks) followed by the Enter key for a new paragraph. Then copy everything except the newly-created paragraph into the new document. Is that document any better?

As Charles indicates, your document may have acquired some form of corruption. If one or more of your tables is the source of that corruption, the 'repair' method he describes won't fix it. Unfortunately, too, Word has no tools to help with identifying which table(s) might be corrupt. Corrupt tables can often be 'repaired' by:
• converting the tables to text and back again;
• cutting & pasting them to another document that you save the document in RTF format, which you then close then re-open before copying them back to the source document; or
• saving the document in RTF format, closing the document then re-opening it and re-saving in the doc(x) format.
Do note that some forms of table corruption can only be repaired by converting the tables to text and back again.

Before you go down that path, though, I'd suggest repairing the Office installation (via Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair - or whatever the Control Panel path is on XP). Do also take heed of Charles' advice re the incompatibility of Windows XP and Office 2013.

Paul, I've appropriated your advice for corrupted tables for my page on Tables and added a section on how to convert Tables to Text and Text to Tables. In Ribbon versions I had a time finding the Text to Table command until I figured out to look under the Insert Table menu.

Charles / Paul,

Thanks for responses. I read Charles' first and tried that. Problem solved. This time.

This isn't the first time "buggy" things happened in the documents I frequently work with. They are based on an original document full of tables that someone else created years ago. I've been creating new documents in the same format by opening one of the original author's documents, saving with a new name, and putting new content into the tables. I haven't taken time to create my own original document from scratch which I've been thinking might clear up some of these anomalies. Before I do that I'll continue as I have been and run through the suggestions you both provided in this thread when i encounter weirdness.

Thanks again.

I will mention to IT guy about word 2013 and XP incompatibility but in fact I'm not really sure this is XP. I don't know how to check. I was told it is because of the shape of the windows icon on my desktop toolbar.
