Default Contents Page Field Formatting

Hi,

See attachted a picture of a contents page. For some reason last time I did 'update field' the 3rd headings page numbers went all the way to the right.

How can I go about making all the numbers on the right aligned the same (same point as the inner ones)

Cheers

Turn on Word's formatting display, by clicking on the ¶ symbol on the Ribbon's Home tab, then drag one of the errant paragraph breaks in the TOC to the required location. Most TOC Styles auto-update to reflect such changes; if not, right-click on the paragraph break and choose Styles>Update (Style name) to match selection.

I can't seem to click and drag the paragraph breaks (they are just normal enter hits right?)

When I try to click those it just selects the whole 'field'

You need to make them visible and ensure a single paragraph break is the only thing you select.

They are visible, but I literally can't click anywhere on the page without the whole field highlighting (minus the break symbol at the end of each row)

Your screenshot shows the insertion point over the last '8', not on the paragraph break. Furthermore, the Table of Contents display only reflects how you have Word configured (see under File|Options|Advanced>Show document content>Field shading), not that the entire Table of Contents is selected.

I'm sorry but I'm not getting you. I have no idea what an insertion point and as far as I can see there is nothing above the 8.

Can you eli5 please?

Insertion point = where something goes when you start typing. Sometimes mistakenly called the cursor.

You need to select the paragraph mark, by itself.

The paragraph break isn't 'clickable' for me if you know what I mean?

Use the arrow keys and the shift key.
Move the insertion point to the beginning of the next line using the right arrow key. Press the shift key and then the left arrow key.

When the paragraph break is highlighted and I click and drag it just moves the 8 to another line. The click and drag isn't working. Any other suggestions?

It just means explain like I'm 5, forgot i'm not on Reddit haha

Y'know what, I'll just attatch a document with only the contents page here 'cos I must be missing something obivious.

If anyone could manage to figure it out it'd be much appreciated.

If you want a quick fix, highlight the whole TOC and adjust the tab stop to 6.5. Right now the styles TOC 1 and TOC 2 are at different points. Of course, other methods to correctly define the TOC parameters will be more correct but, this quick fix of the tabs will get it done. (Note that the tabs were not visible in previous screen shots so, nobody would have caught it so quickly).

Thanks for the reply

I must stress that I am absolutely clueless with word. How do I adjust tab stops?

Also, I want this to only apply to the TOC. I have a 'list of tables' and 'list of figures' which seem to change as I change the table of contents field.
