Default deleting page numbers in word file

I am really frustrated in trying to complete a large file by creating a table of contents and having it match the numbered pages. I thought I would try to fix the problem by deleting the page numbers and starting over. Now I cant even delete the page numbers. What is happening? I'm using Win 10 and Word 2010.

You don't even need literal page numbers for the TOC to work.

You are entering the Header or Footer section and you can't delete page numbers?

If you go to the ribbon under --

Insert >> Header & Footer >> Page Number >> Remove Page Numbers

Other than that, can you attach a small sample where you can't delete.

I can't replicate your problem

Default deleting page numbers

Thanks for replying. Frankly, I'm very confused. My project is a songbook for a retirement community. The music file was written in another program (Finale) and requires matching page numbers in the lyric songbook. This file is huge (200 pages plus TofC) I'll try to post a small part of it. 1st, I have to figure out how to post any file here. <grin>
I thought I had finished this file about the 1st of Dec. and have been trying to add page nos and ToC ever since. The page numbers are essential to the document and the ToC keeps fouling up my page numbers. I thought the Word part of this project was going to be the easy part--boy was I wrong.
Is there an easy way to post part of a doc?

Yes. When you reply to the thread select the "Go Advance" option. Then click on the 'paperclip" icon to make your attachment. Browse to where your file is stored, then upload the file. Once uploaded, close the window and complete your reply.

OOoppss...did not mean to confuse with the above entry...sorry.

Default File with page numbers that I can't delete

Here are the first few pages of the project under discussion. I have a lot of problems with this, but the current one is how to get rid of the superfluous page numbers. They don't seem to erase.

Any ideas in helping me create a table of contents that doesn't destroy the integrity of the page numbers would be very helpful. I need page numbers on the right side of odd numbered pages and on the left side of even numbered pages for binding in a booklet.

See Page Numbers in Word 2007-2016.

In a simple document, page numbers are simple.

The following Add-In lets you set continuous page numbers. Continuous Page Numbering Add-In

Automatic page numbers are fields. You can manually type a page number on each page which is simply typed text. Unless these are continuous, though, they will bear no relationship to page numbers in a Table of Contents.
