Default Document combining not working?

I have Microsoft Word 2016. I have a set of original documents and their corresponding 'revised' version. I'm trying to see what changes have been made to the original document. Normally when I combine document A with document B, it shows the changes made to document A as if it had been redlined, with the deleted words crossed out, etc.

However, in some instances when I combine document A with document B, while it does show where revisions have been made, the deleted word isn't crossed out, even if that word has been deleted from document A in document B.

For example, document A says: "The dog jumped over the log."

Document B says: "The dog leapt over the log."

When I combine document A with document B, the sentence says: "The dog jumpedleapt over the log." It has both words and jumped is not crossed out like it should be, even though jumpedleapt is underlined showing that a change has been made.

Does anyone know why this is going on and how I can fix it? It's driving me crazy. I hope I explained that well enough.
