Default My Document was deemed unrecoverable!

Hello:

How can I remedy this? I just finised a novel which I saved continulously and yet word sent a message "Unrecoverable Disk Error..." My document file no longer appears to exist. This is a disaster for me. How do i get it back? Why did Word do this to me?

If this document was only saved on a USB flash drive then that is a possible explanation of why Word did this to you. Although I haven't had a problem myself, there are plenty of people who say it is a bad idea to work off USB drives. The file can become corrupted if you just pull the drive out of the USB slot before Word has finished saving it.

If you can't see a file at all then there isn't much we can do from this end but we can provide some guidance to help you maybe locate something.

Firstly, where was the file when you last accessed it? Are there any files in that location that might contain content? Make sure you are showing hidden files to be sure.

Have you looked in your Autosave location? Maybe start with this article and report back on what you have tried.

Default Unrecoverable Disk Error Reply

Hello:

In response to your reply to my problem "Unrecoverable Disk Error", I can safely say that I don't use flash drives. So that didn't cause the problem. Secondly, Word was set for autosave every 10 minutes. This is not right! The crazy thing is that I saved continulously. About a week ago however, I got a message that autosave wasn't working. I checked the box and sure enough it was selected. Please help me. Ever sense I started using Windows 10 I have had problems with word, but this is outrageous!

Autosave, as designed by Microsoft, will NEVER save to your computer. It is a feature for use with OneDrive or SharePoint.

If you are getting unrecoverable disk errors it is past time to be backing up your hard drive.

I've been using computers now for forty years. I've been lucky. I've only had three catastrophic hard drive failures.

Default There is not excuse for MS Word's behavior

You've given nebulous reasons why unrecogizable errors occur. None of the reasons apply to me. I had checked autosave in my word document; it was on. I saved my work repeatedly. Your responses are cold and expected for partisans. I no longer trust word. I will have to use another word processor that doesn't destroy my work. You guys can circle the wagon all you want. I finally realize, after other episodes with this flaky software, it's time to move on!

You haven't told us the exact error message. I agree with Charles that a disk error message does sound as if it is time to replace the drive.

"unrecoverable disk error" is not a Word error message. It is a Windows error message, informing you of an error reading/writing to a disk--be it a flash drive, a floppy disk, a hard drive, or an SSD.

My point is that you shouldn't be blaming Word; drive failures are right up there with death and taxes.

There are various services that will try to recover data from a corrupt drive--you might look into one of thise.

Blaming Word and moving to other software isn't going to cure a hardware problem - which is what you have. Your attitude to those trying to help you stinks. Thread closed.
