Line Numbering & Blank Lines
Hi, I'm trying to include line numbers as part of a (long) piece of poetry. When I select the text, which is spaced like this:
x x x (space) x x x (space)... The line numbering, when set to continuous, includes the spaces as lines - this is naturally not advantageous since I'm trying to keep a running total of line #'s to the side of the page. Is there any way to make the line numbering not acknowledge blank lines? Using the "supress for current paragraph" option isn't a viable option since I have many blank lines, and is a major pain to activate on every blank line. Using Word 2007, thank you =) |

Can you use soft returns (Shift Enter) inside a stanza and paragraph spacing instead of a blank return between stanzas?
If so, a series of search and replace functions will make the conversion easy enough. Find ^p and replace with ^l Find ^l^l and replace with ^p |

I realize this is 6 years old but I figure I'd give it a shot. I'm having the exact same issue and the soft returns don’t help. Has someone created/does someone know how to create a macro that would automatically do this. E.G. A macro that simply "suppresses current section" for line numbers on blank lines/lines containing no words?
Having said that, if anyone is unwilling to do this, I'd be willing to give this a try if I could get some more information on what the "suppress current section" macro command is. Thanks. LD. |

A long-term solution is to not use blank paragraphs to create spacing. Instead, apply some Spacing Before (or Spacing After) to text.

You SHOULD be doing this as Stefan suggests and structure your document correctly but a macro to suppress the line numbers on empty paragraphs is easy enough.
Code:
Sub Temp1() Dim aPara As Paragraph For Each aPara In ActiveDocument.Paragraphs If aPara.Range.Text = vbCr Then aPara.NoLineNumber = True End If Next aPara End Sub

Hi,
I also write poetry and normally used Open Office. When I recently started using Word to write I discovered this new problem where word counts blank lines. My solution is to use Open Office to count the lines in my poems as this program has a check box option in the line numbering box, which you can uncheck to stop counting 'blank lines'. It's too complicated for me to have to set up styles etc. Hope this helps |

In Word a "blank line" is an empty paragraph and contains around 50 different formatting commands. Do not use the Enter key for spacing! Word is not a typewriter; it is a word processing program!

WordPerfect is also a word processing program, yet when you ask it to count lines, it gives you the option of not counting blank lines. I keep an old version of WordPerfect on my computer just for this feature. I'm a medical transcriptionist and get paid by the line, but blank lines are not counted. When you type as much as 5,000 lines of text per day, in all kinds of formats, having the feature of not counting blank lines is a necessity.

This thread was started in 2010. It was resurrected in 2016 and has again been resurrected in 2020. Neither resurrection has contributed anything to resolving the OP's issue, which was addressed a decade ago. Thread closed.
