Default Numbering list disappeared

Hello All,

I had a file with a numbered list.
The order of the numbers reflected the "Heading" assigned.
In the way

Heading 1 = main chapter 1, 2 , 3 , 4

Heading 2 = sub-chapters 1.1, 1.2.....2.1, 2.2...3.1 , 3.2

Heading 3 = sub-sub-chapters 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3....2.1.1, 2.2.1 etc

In this way, everytime I had a new paragraps or section, once I assigned it the specific "Heading" the numbering followed the orders within the file, based on the position.

Now the Headings are still there, but numbering and numbers disappeared.

Any way to re-insert number based on the "Headings"

If is confusing I will try to insert screenshots.

Thank you.

See How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly.

Do not try using the numbering buttons on the Ribbon without following these steps.

This method attaches numbering to the heading styles.

Why use Microsoft Word’s built-in heading styles? by Shauna Kelly

Thank you for your reply.
The point is that all the headings are already in the correct place and order and I would like just to show again the list of numbers

I suspect that you somehow updated your document's styles to those in the template (without numbering).

Check in the Developer Tab under Document Template and make sure that your document is not set to update styles from the template upon opening. (The checkbox to update styles should be unchecked.)

The article I linked shows how to set your headings up with numbers. If you follow the steps in the article (all of them), you will have the numbering you want.

Word has had a longtime problem with instability of its automatic numbering. I have seen automatic numbers simply vanish from a document while the numbered heading styles remained unchanged. The only way I know of to create stable numbered headings is by defining multilevel lists.
