Default Word document with check boxes

I have a word document form that I utilize for requests. I have check boxes in the form that selections are made from. I want to restrict some of these check boxes from being selected based on other check boxes that were selected. As a simple example, if i had a section with a Yes and No checkbox, I want to prohibit the the No checkbox from being checked once the Yes one is checked. Some of my sections it may be more complex; I would need multiple checkboxes restricted if a specific one is checked in this section.

In such cases, it would be far simpler to use a single dropdown with Yes/No, etc. answers, so that only one choice is possible.

Creating mutually-exclusive checkboxes requires programming. If you really want to go down that path see, for example:

As Paul said, the simplest solution is a drop-down with choices.
If you want to go the coding route, much of the work has been done. See Content Controls Custom Checkboxes.
