how can I put a long table in two columns
I am using an HP pavilion that I purchased new one year ago.
It has windows 10 and Office 2016. In MSWord I have a four-column table covering, almost eight pages but less than half the width of the page excluding margins. There are about thirty rows per page I want to change the document from one column to two columns. When I do Layout-columns-morecolumns and Choose 2 columns with space between of 0.1 inch, it completely messes up and will not give me the four or five pages. My question is: does not MSWord allow the table to be divided for this situation? |

If the table columns do not fit within the newspaper columns, you have to resize the table. Click inside the table; on the Table Tools Layout tab, click AutoFit, and then click AutoFit Window. (To get fixed columns, you can then click Table Tools Layout | AutoFit | Fixed Column Width.)

The Page setup tools apply to page columns, not to table columns. That said, it's not entirely clear what you're trying to achieve. If you have unwanted table columns, you can delete them. You might then be able to get the results you're after via the Page setup tools.

I think I was clear enough saying that the table is
narrower than half the available page width. But I deleted one of the four columns to check. It still does the same thing. My question is: does not MSWord allow a narrow eight-page long table to go on roughly four pages if the number of columns is changed from one to two? Row heights are small, about 30 rows per page. Could be I need a program fix? |

Word does allow a table to be used in a document with a multi-column layout. Evidently, then, either the way you're going about it is wrong or there is something else about your document's setup that you haven't told use that is causing problems. Without actually seeing the problem document, though, it can be difficult for anyone to diagnose the issue. Can you attach a document to a post with some representative data (delete anything sensitive)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.

I am trying to attach the file.
My left and right page margins are 0.3 inches on letter. |

This is working in Word 2007:
1. Select the table. 2. Bring up the table Properties dialog. 3. On the “Table” tab, set the “Text Wrapping” option to “None”. 4. Apply a 2-column format to the selection. The table should be reflowed continuously from the left column to the next. |

I did what you wrote and it worked.
I believe the only thing I did not as before was to set the wrap to none. I wonder why that was so important, do you know? It doesn't seem to me that it should make such difference. Thanks so much for your solution. |

It makes a fundamental difference, in that wrapped tables are treated much like pictures and such. Ever tried to get a picture to wrap in columns?

When text is set to wrap around a table, the table becomes a “floating” object and acts very much like a graphic. As such, it cannot be reflowed. Have a look at Positioning Tables (Like Floating Graphics) on a Page.
