Word hangs completely when editing punctuation
Word 2016/office 365 on Windows 10 Pro, all up to date (I think)
Document c. 80,000 words This document has many (>200) double quotes, e.g. "text", which my editor has asked me to change to single quotes, e.g. 'text' using Review, All Markup. I proceeded with Find (space)" and this located the first one to change by typing ' with " crossed out (correctly). I then went to the end of the quote and did the same there, then Find again. After a number of such corrections, always apparently during the second change in a quote, Word would hang completely and the rest of the text starts to be slowly markup-deleted, letter-by-letter. By 'hang', I mean absolutely, no way to do anything, including leaving the programme. I close down the Task View screen with Word to stop it or Ctrl-Alt-Del. I ran the MS short 'cure-problems' app: no difference |

It's possible the Office installation has developed a fault. Try repairing the Office installation (via Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair).
It's also possible the document has acquired some of corruption. Corrupt documents can often be 'repaired' by inserting a new, empty, paragraph at the very end, copying everything except that new paragraph to a new document based on the same template (headers & footers may need to be copied separately), closing the old document and saving the new one over it.

Thank you for your reply, Paul.
I'd already tried the Repair option before the previous posting, without success. I carefully did the procedure outlined. Unfortunately, after about 20 corrections on the new file, the problem resurfaced, as before. Equally unfortunately, the new file had lost all the Markup corrections, assuming they were all correct without my editor reviewing them. I may be talking nonsense, but my impression is that Word is restricting the availability of memory, disk space or some other feature during editing of the document. A system summary, with Word running, is below: OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Pro Version 10.0.14393 Build 14393 Other OS Description Not Available OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation System Name BNE-MAIN System Manufacturer Hewlett-Packard System Model HP Pro3500 Series System Type x64-based PC System SKU D5R79EA#ABU Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-3240 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 3400 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s) BIOS Version/Date AMI 8.17, 25/10/2013 SMBIOS Version 2.7 Embedded Controller Version 255.255 BIOS Mode Legacy BaseBoard Manufacturer Foxconn BaseBoard Model Not Available BaseBoard Name Base Board Platform Role Desktop Secure Boot State Unsupported PCR7 Configuration Binding Not Possible Windows Directory C:\WINDOWS System Directory C:\WINDOWS\system32 Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1 Locale United Kingdom Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "10.0.14393.206" Username BNE-main\Brian Time Zone GTB Standard Time Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB Total Physical Memory 3.89 GB Available Physical Memory 1.90 GB Total Virtual Memory 4.14 GB Available Virtual Memory 1.72 GB Page File Space 256 MB Page File C:\pagefile.sys Hyper-V - VM Monitor Mode Extensions Yes Hyper-V - Second Level Address Translation Extensions Yes Hyper-V - Virtualisation Enabled in Firmware No Hyper-V - Data Execution Protection Yes Brian |

Presumably, by 'markup corrections' you're referring to Tracked Changes. These shouldn't be deleted when copying & pasting to a new document. That said, part of the problem you're having may be due to the use of Tracked Changes when trying to do a large-scale Find/Replace. In such a scenario, Word will try to apply the Find/Replace to all the content, including content that was tracked as moved, deleted or added and every update will itself become another tracked addition & deletion pair. You probably don't need to track such large-scale corrections, so you might do better to turn it off for that.
