How to edit grayed out text in Microsoft Word online version
I'm using the online version of Microsoft Word. I uploaded a document (extension docx) to OneDrive for editing. The doc contained the phrase "June 1981 - Present". When I opened the doc in Word (online version), the text 'Present' was grayed out. I don't understand why. I am unable to edit this text. Nothing else in the doc is grayed out and is readily editable. How can I get around this issue? Note that when the doc was originally composed in Word 2013 (?) on another laptop, this text appeared ungrayed. |

That really depends on what's causing the 'Present' to be treated that way. Without access to the document, it's rather hard to advise...
Can you attach the relevant portion of document to a post here (delete anything sensitive)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.

f you click on the 'Present' using an ordinary version of Word, you'll see someone has typed it in a Date building block. Evidently, instead of replacing the building block with the word 'Present', someone simply overtyped the date within it...

Paul, I had originally created the doc and had not consciously used a Date building block. This was done on a different laptop, which is no longer available to me. However, I had transferred the file to this laptop. Regardless, my question remains, how can I get rid of the block containing 'Present' and replace it with text 'October 2016'?

Perhaps the online version of Word is not capable of altering the text in a Content Control.
Are you also not able to delete the whole paragraph and retype it?

Andrew, I tried highlighting the entire para and hit delete. The delete was unsuccessful. The entire highlighted text remained in place.

You are going to have to edit it using a full version of Word I suspect.
From brief exploration, content controls don't work in the online version. Some can be deleted, but they cannot be changed. Date Picker Content Controls cannot be changed nor deleted. Here is a link to a document with some kinds of Word features that do not work in the online version. |

Charles, thank you for your insight. I asked my son (who is remote from me) to help. After much prodding, he edited the doc and was able to remove the grayed text using the regular Word version.
