Difficulty linking and embedding images in Microsoft Word 2016
I am running Word for Mac 15.23.1 (on Sierra 10.12.1). I am doing the following:
- Insert->Pictures->Picture From File... - Click on "options" in the bottom-left corner - Check both the "Link to file" and "Save with document" boxes - Select the file I want to add and then click Insert My understanding is that the "link to file" option is supposed to mean that if the image is subsequently updated, the updated image will appear in the document automatically. Also, my understanding is that checking the "save to document" box means that if I send the Word file to someone else, the image will actually be embedded in the document, so they can see it. However, the "link to file" option doesn't seem to work. For example, if I insert "x.jpg" using the above method, and then modify x.jpg, nothing changes in the Word file (even if I restart Word and reload the Word document). Any idea what I'm doing wrong? |

Images inserted with the 'Save with document' option don't necessarily update automatically. For that, you also need to set Word's 'update automatic links at open' and 'update linked data before printing' options. On PC versions of Word, these are found under File|Options|Advanced>General and File|Options|Display>Printing, respectively.

Hi,
Thanks so much for the very quick reply! Unfortunately, I am still having difficulties. The "update automatic links at open" option was already checked. The "update linked data before printing" option wasn't checked, so I checked it. But the image is still not updating automatically under any circumstances (I modified the image, then tried closing the document and opening it again, and also printing it, but the image in the word document never changed). |

Assuming Word 2016 on the Mac is similar in this respect to the PC version, go to File|Info. Do you see an 'Edit Links to Files' option (lower right-corner on a PC)? If no, the image isn't linked. If yes, click on that and make sure the updates are set to automatic.

Is this after right-clicking on the image, or in the main file menu? I don't see a "File->info" option either way (although perhaps it is different on Mac).

It's from the main file menu (on a PC).
