I can convert them to PDF files and Word will then open them but of course I can't edit them. What am I missing? This problem happened all of a sudden.

Have you tried repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair)?

I tried to repair the program as you said but it doesn't give me the option to change or repair, just uninstall. I'll keep staring at it to see if I'm doing something wrong. Thanks for your input!

The Change option should be Next to the Uninstall option. The Repair function only becomes available if you choose the Change option. You should also be able to access it if you right-click on the Office installation entry in the Program listing.

Upon further investigation the options to uninstall, change or repair are not all offered for all the programs. For instance, itunes has all three when I highlight that program while Microsoft Office only offers to uninstall but not repair or change. I think I may go back a couple months and reset the computer to an earlier date. At this point I just want to fix this inconvenience...I'll probably never figure out what happened. I'll make an entry as to whether that fixes things. Thanks for your suggestion!

What programs other than Office offer is immaterial; it's Office 2010 we're concerned with and that program does come with a Change option. If your Office installation is so seriously damaged that even the Change option isn't available, you may need to uninstall & reinstall it.
