Need help identifying this non-printing mark

Hello,

I have received a Word file from a client that I need to clean up. It contains a list of several thousand words, which he had as a numbered list. I removed the numbering (changed to "none"), but there is still a non-printing character that I can't identify at the start of every line. It's not a bullet, outline mark, or anything from the numbered list function. As I said, it is a non-printing character, so I don't think he knew it was there as he was making the list. Any ideas what this is, and how to get rid of it?

I just discovered that if I select the "No Spacing" style, the marks disappear, but selecting "Clear formatting" brings them back. I can't see any difference in settings, so I still don't know what is changing.

That is an indicator that there is a Paragraph formatting setting that affects pagination. This could be 'Keep with next' or 'Keep lines together'.

If this setting is present in the style applied to the text then clear formatting is going to remove the local setting turning it off.
