Default Hyperlinks change appearance in Word

I realize that Office Professional 2003 is no longer supported by Microsoft but does that mean that my 2003 apps will no longer work like before?
When closing a word doc with hyperlinks in word 2003 then open the document, the hyperlinks change appearance & no longer work until highlighting the doc then hitting shift + F9 keys. WHY??

AFAIK, Office 2003 applications work as well as ever. Outlook is quite vulnerable, though.

When you say that hyperlinks change appearance, what do you mean?
Do you mean that they look something like this screen shot?

If so, press Alt+F9 to toggle display of fields. This is an application-wide option and stays the way you have it until you toggle it again.

That is exactly what they look like. About 2 week or so ago my Windows 10 updated and since then every time I open a Word doc with hyperlinks they revert back to your example. Every Word document I have with hyperlinks embedded, I have to use ctrl A to highlight then do the shift +F9 key for the link to work. When I close the document, the link looses the ability for the link to work. I have about 4 pages of Word with username-passwords-and links to sites I visit stored on a jump drive for security purposes.
WOW I just looked at the link you provided; @ 79 yo I don't think I have enough time left to read all of the material.

You do this once, and you do not have to press Ctrl+A first. This setting sticks and is for all Word documents you open. It is a "toggle" which means that each time you press Alt+F9 you either switch to seeing raw fields or you see what the field is supposed to display.
