Heading blacked out in Word 2010 / Heading highlighted black in Word 2010
Dear All,
I have set up a specific document using Word 2010 with the styles I would like as follows: I have set my chapter titles as Heading 1, chapter sections as Heading 2, chapter sub-sections as Heading 3 - Here I use the existing styles. In the same document, I have created a new style for the "Appendix", where I have set appendix titles identical to Heading 1, appendix sections identical to Heading 2 and appendix sub-sections as Heading 3. This means that the appendix and chapter styles are the same and thus consistent. Problem: After saving the Word 2010 document and opening it at a later time, I found that the appendix section and sub-section numbering had been blacked out (highlighted black). Attached document: Please see the attached document which shows the appendix from the document. Please use this as an example to understand the problem. I have already read and tried the suggestions on the following sites and others too which are repetitive and not permanent solutions: 1) http://superuser.com/questions/23807...er-blacked-out 2) http://tomtalks.uk/2015/06/fixing-mi...d-out-numbers/ So could you please help me with this problem? Looking forward to your help. Raptor |

The numbering in that document is not applied at the paragraph style level so the numbering is easily removed by selecting the paragraph and pressing Ctrl-Q. This numbering should definitely be done with styles instead of being locally applied.
To fix the issue of the blacked out number AND the style definitions at the same time, put your cursor in the first paragraph (since it is the first instance of the Level 1 numbering) and go to Home > Multilevel List > Define New Multilevel List. In the dialog that appears, if the More>> button appears in the bottom left click it to see the extra controls that you need. For each level, associate the right styles to the numbering. From the looks of your sample doc, this means Level 1 links to Appendix Level 2 links to Heading 2 Level 3 links to Heading 3 etc Then click OK. Finally, select your headings and press Ctrl-Q to remove the local formatting.

To fix the numbering, run the following macro, based on a similar macro created by Doug Robbins:
Code:
Sub ResetCharFormattingForLists() Dim lt As ListTemplate Dim l as ListLevel For Each lt In ActiveDocument.ListTemplates For Each l In lt.ListLevels l.Font.Reset Next l Next lt End Sub
