Default Putting radical sign over squared number?

Hi all, first time here. Just got Microsoft 2016 for free from my college and have been using OpenOffice for over a decade. Hoping this forum can help me work out some of the issues I've run into.

I know how to put a radical sign over σ, but Word 2016 won't let me input σ^2 for whatever reason. Anyone know how to do this?

It's not clear what you're trying to achieve. Have you tried superscripting the ^2?

I don't know how to superscript. This is what I have: √(σ^2)

You might try clicking on the Superscript button in the font panel on the Ribbon's Home tab...

I'm infinitely lost now. I opened my document and the ^2 was perfectly placed. My problem fixed itself???????? Whatever, thank you for your patience.
