Footer for page numbers recently started showing a colored field when adding page numbers
Hello.
Until today, I've had no problems adding page numbers to selected documents. However, when I choose to add page numbers now, the choices all have a pink box with the page number in it. It looks like I chose highlighting or some other font effect. I can remove the modification from the footer and the pink disappears but when I try again to add numbers, the pink box is back. I tried in a new document and it does the same. Can someone advise how I can get back to adding just plain page numbers and can this pink field nonsense? Thank you. |

Please create a new document and type the word "page." Select the word, and press Ctrl+F9 then F9. Do you see the shading?

Thank you. I did as you advised and there was no pink, just the number 1. What next?

Try modifying the Page Number Style. That is a character style and it may have the shading.
The reason for the first exercise was to see if what you were seeing was field shading. It is not. Page Numbers in Word 2007-2016 |

I can't find the option for Page Number Style. Do you know where it is in Office 2016? Here's some more info...the pink boxes are also present when I look at the header and footer. Also, when I looked in borders, there were more pink boxes on the edge of the page and vertical. Hope that is a clue worth something. Somehow I was able to number the other documents but it's just persistent pink in my largest document.

Press Alt+Shift+P to insert a page field in the page number style. Select that page number. It should have your shading before you select it.
Drop down the Styles Pane. (Click on the little arrow on the bottom right of the Styles group on the Home tab.) If you do not see the Page Number style, click on Options in the bottom right of the pane. Change the styles displayed to "All Styles" and the order to Alphabetical. Find the page number style. Right click on it and select Modify. In the bottom left of the Style modification box is a Format button. Click on that and choose Borders. That will open the borders and shading dialog. Click on the shading tab and fix it. OK your way back to the Modify Styles dialog. Select "All documents based on this template" as the place to save your modification. OK back to your document. Is the shading gone? |

Thanks Charles. I followed the instructions to the letter and I'm afraid the pink is still showing when I select Add Page Number. The only thing I did that wasn't in your details was at the end of your instructions, I clicked over to the INSERT tab from the HOME tab to choose the Page Number.
Also, at the beginning of your instructions, Alt+Shift+P showed the number 1 where the cursor was but there was no pink shading present as you had indicated. Any ideas on what to try next? Thanks. kev |

You could insert a page number using the Insert tab and then modify from there, I suppose. Did you find the Page Number style?
Attach a document with a page number field here and I'll take a look at it. To attach a document, click on the Go Advanced button and click on the paper clip icon. |

Sorry I took so long to respond. I've attached a screenshot showing the number and pink field.
New documents and other updated older documents insert page numbers in the usual manner. It is this one document giving me trouble. Note: When I cut and paste the text into a new document, the properties stay with the data and the pink field shows up. Thanks kev |

Didn't you see the example above per your request? Maybe I misunderstood, was there something else you wanted to see.
Also, I just found out that the pink field shows up when I try to use the bullets options. I gotta get rid of this pink crap. It's driving me nuts as any color would, but pink? Exceptionally worse. thefonebug |

Charles asked for a document and you posted a screen capture. We can see the pink area on the page but we can't tell you what it is without examining the document. We might have had a fighting chance if you revealed all the hidden characters before doing your screenshot but you didn't even do that. It sounds like you have a style with a background shading applied to it but we can't diagnose it from a screen capture.
