can't add subdocuments in master document (word 2013)
Dear fellow Word users,
I'm using Word 2013 in the Windows 10 64 bits environment . I have a recurring problem with building master documents from several subdocuments. My problem is simply that if I create the master document, add several subdocuments, close the master document, and then later re-open it and want to add new subdocments, I simply can't ! The following screen capture precisely shows the problem (it's in french, but the button I frame with the red rectangle is the "insert" button used to insert subdocument link in the master document) The only quick fix I found to this problem was to re-create a new subdocument. But then I had to go through re-numbering of all figures, tables, equations, references, and re-uniformize the formatting, and re-generating the lists of figures and tables. I don't want to do it again so I ask to you: how to avoid this problem to occur, or how to make me again able to click on "insert"? Thanks in advance for kind help! |

I strongly suggest you read:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/Wh...ocsCorrupt.htm http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/RecoverMasterDocs.htm http://www.addbalance.com/word/masterdocuments.htm and stop using Word's Master Document 'feature' immediately. You can achieve substantially the same benefits using INCLUDETEXT and/or RD fields without the drawbacks.

Thanks for your answer.
However, I still need to use it since I wrote my big files in order to use master document from the beginning. I made saves of them and I only use copies of them in a separate folder with the master document, for page, table, figure, equation numbering. I'm a good word practitionner, I also have programming skills, but I never programmed in word VBA so I don't want to take the risk. I choose to use master document while knowing it's risky, because I saved my work and I don't want to edit subdocuments from within the master one except when there is no choice (correct for stupid auto-formatting etc). The links you provided to me drove me to a more direct answer to my concerns: http://techwhirl-1.wpengine.netdna-c...masterdocs.pdf Meanwhile I found a quicker fix for the specific problem mentioned in this topic, see the screen capture: This is not an ideal solution (first, it takes around 30 seconds to display all documents, and second, why would I need to display them in order to add a link? It is nonsensical). But it's better than re-building the entire master document. So I'im still open to better solutions. |

Lots of backups - kept offline! Keep in mind John McGhie's statement that "there are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are corrupt and those that will be corrupt soon."
That was my page you read. It does reference Steve Hudson's work. The point Paul made is that you can do much the same thing, without the risks, using INCLUDETEXT and RD fields. This in not vba or programming. It is fields. |
